Vegan omega-3 algal oil and powder

Applications

With MarisOmega we specialize in natural, vegan omega-3 algal oil and powder rich in DHA for infant and young child nutrition, a fatty acid that plays an important role in early brain developmen. Our microalgal oils and powders are also used in various functional foods and nutritional supplements, since throughout life, it is difficult for most people to reach sufficient omega-3 EPA and DHA intakes through their regular diet. Our powders include protein-based formulas as well as starch-based products for hypoallergenic and acidic foods. Maris Algal Oil and Maris Algal Powder have a perfect fit wherever a clean taste and oxidative stability are required. Main applications include fortified foods, chewable soft gel capsules and novel supplement formats such as gummies and liquids.

Sourcing and manufacturing

Our vegan omega-3 algal oil and powder are derived from natural strains of the single-cell microalgae (Schizochytrium sp.). These single-cell vegan omega-3 algal oils are regulated as novel food by the European Union, and we meet all regional requirements, including conditions of use, specific requirements for infant nutrition, and organic product standards. Our state-of-the-art facilities adhere to both local and international regulations, including good manufacturing practices and food hygiene standards. All products undergo thorough third-party testing, in addition to the testing performed throughout the production process.

Our sourcing and qualification approach for our vegan omega-3 algal oil and powder ingredients goes beyond mere specification compliance. We adopt a comprehensive 360° view, taking into account:
  • The primary raw materials from which the ingredient is obtained
  • All processing steps along the value chain
  • Processing aids and additives
  • Contaminant removal and product safety
  • Regulatory considerations such as patents and novel food conditions of use
  • ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria

We offer various types of premium-quality vegan omega-3 algal oil and powder, all of which must meet the strict quality criteria we set. As an example, see below the supply-chain set-up and quality criteria for our vegan omega-3 algal oil: MarisDHA Algal Oil.

Case study vegan omega-3 algal oil: MarisDHA Algal Oil

Depiction of the microalgae Schizochytrium, a single-celled organism from which our vegan omega-3 algal oil is derived.

Wild algae strain discovery

MarisDHA Algal Oil derives from the microalgae Schizochytrium, a single cell organism, found in coastal mangrove areas which feeds on decaying leaves. Within the large number of Schizochytrium strains found in nature in different parts of the world, particularly promising candidates were discovered and registered.

Depiction of the selective breeding process used to optimize the natural organisms for fast and robust growth.

Natural strain breeding

Selective breeding is used to optimize the natural organisms for fast and robust growth, and high contents of omega-3 fatty acids. The breeding process as well as all previous and following steps of development and manufacturing are carried strictly without the use of genetic modification, irradiation or other technologies that would alter the algae’s natural character or properties.

The algae for our vegan omega-3 algal oil are grown by fermentation, a multi-stage process in a closed system under controlled conditions.

Non-GM Fermentation

The algae are grown by fermentation, a multi-stage process in a closed system under controlled conditions. For re-creating the algae’s natural seawater habitat, salt, minerals and natural, plant-derived macronutrients are added. All feedstocks are obtained from non-GM sources and selecting for providing optimum conditions for the algae’s growth and lipid composition.

Our vegan omega-3 algal oil is tested internally and by third-party laboratories for specification compliance.

Product release

Before release, the final product is tested internally and by third-party laboratories for specification compliance. Particular emphasis is put on the oil’s organoleptic assessment and its oxidative status as well as on strict limits for process contaminants and persistent organic pollutants.

Refining for our vegan omega-3 algal oil is carried out under gentle conditions.

Gentle refining

Unlike in fish oils, contaminant levels of the crude algal oil are low. Therefore, refining can be carried out under gentle conditions. This process includes deacidification (for lowering the content of free fatty acids), bleaching and deodorizing. For winterized oils, a cold fractionation step is added.

For our vegan omega-3 algal oil, we use solvent-free oil extraction.

Solvent-free oil extraction

After fermentation, the lipids contained in the algae’s cell membrane are released using environmentally friendly, solvent-free cell wall disruption. This step is followed by an efficient oil separation and drying process. Temperature is kept low in order to avoid lipid oxidation of the crude algal oil.

MarisDHA Algal Oil fully complies with all relevant regulations for use in infant and medical nutrition, food and dietary supplements. It may be used in products certified organic, halal and kosher.
