MarisOmega specializes in natural, microalgal DHA omega-3 and fungal ARA omega-6 oils for infant and young child nutrition, where both fatty acids play an important role in early brain development. Our DHA microalgal oils are also used in various functional foods and nutritional supplements, since throughout life, it is difficult for most people to reach sufficient DHA intakes through their regular diet. MarisOmega Algal Oils have a perfect fit wherever a clean taste and oxidative stability are required. Main applications include fortified foods, chewable soft gel capsules and novel supplement formats such as gummies and liquids.
Our products are obtained from natural strains of single-celled DHA microalgae (Schizochytrium sp.) and ARA fungi (Mortierella alpina). The European Union regulates single-cell oils as novel foods, and we fulfill all regional requirements, including conditions of use, special requirements for infant nutrition, and organic product standards. We work with state-of-the-art facilities that meet all local and international regulations, including good manufacturing practices and food hygiene standards. All products undergo rigorous third-party testing, in addition to the testing performed throughout the production process.
Our sourcing and qualification approach for omega-3 and omega-6 ingredients goes beyond checking for specification compliance. We take a 360° view, considering
We offer various types of premium-quality algal and fungal oils, all of which all must meet the strict quality criteria we set. As an example, see below the supply-chain set-up and quality criteria for MarisDHA Algal Oil.
MarisDHA Algal Oil derives from the microalgae Schizochytrium, a single cell organism, found in coastal mangrove areas which feeds on decaying leaves. Within the large number of Schizochytrium strains found in nature in different parts of the world, particularly promising candidates were discovered and registered.
Selective breeding is used to optimize the natural organisms for fast and robust growth, and high contents of omega-3 fatty acids. The breeding process as well as all previous and following steps of development and manufacturing are carried strictly without the use of genetic modification, irradiation or other technologies that would alter the algae’s natural character or properties.
The algae are grown by fermentation, a multi-stage process in a closed system under controlled conditions. For re-creating the algae’s natural seawater habitat, salt, minerals and natural, plant-derived macronutrients are added. All feedstocks are obtained from non-GM sources and selecting for providing optimum conditions for the algae’s growth and lipid composition.
Before release, the final product is tested internally and by third-party laboratories for specification compliance. Particular emphasis is put on the oil’s organoleptic assessment and its oxidative status as well as on strict limits for process contaminants and persistent organic pollutants.
Unlike in fish oils, contaminant levels of the crude algal oil are low. Therefore, refining can be carried out under gentle conditions. This process includes deacidification (for lowering the content of free fatty acids), bleaching and deodorizing. For winterized oils, a cold fractionation step is added.
After fermentation, the lipids contained in the algae’s cell membrane are released using environmentally friendly, solvent-free cell wall disruption. This step is followed by an efficient oil separation and drying process. Temperature is kept low in order to avoid lipid oxidation of the crude algal oil.
MarisDHA Algal Oil fully complies with all relevant regulations for use in infant and medical nutrition, food and dietary supplements. It may be used in products certified organic, halal and kosher.
